CONRAD 30
On September 28, 2012, through enactment of Public law 112-176, Congress extended the Conrad State 30 Program until September 30, 2015. Under this act each state’s Department of Public Heath, or its equivalent, may recommend a waiver of the two-year home residency requirement for up to 30 foreign medical graduates who are present in the United States with J-1 non-immigration status.
It is possible to waive the two-year foreign residence requirement if the applicant physician:
- Acquired J-1 status before September 30, 2015, to pursue graduate medical education in the United States;
- Provides at least three (3) – years of medical service in an underserved
area, or for services to patients from underserved areas
- For more information on U.S. Health Professional Shortage Areas and Medically Underserved Areas visit the US Department of Health and Human Services.
- Agrees to commence employment within 90 days of receipt of the waiver and agrees to practice medicine for three (3) years at the facility indicated by the state and named in the waiver application; and
- The State agency has submitted in writing on applicant’s behalf that it is in public interest that a waiver of the two-year foreign residence requirement be granted.
