Case Studies: E-2 Visa validity based on reciprocity schedule

Visa Type: E2 Visa

E-2 Visa validity based on reciprocity schedule

Synopsis

The reciprocity schedule is based on bilateral rules that govern the validity period of visas, number of permissible entries, and fees charged for them. Essentially, the U.S. government grants the same benefits and privileges and charges nationals of other countries whatever their countries grant or charge to U.S. nationals for the same type of visa.

For most E-2 Treaty Countries, the reciprocity schedule is 5 years, but countries like Bangladesh, Jordan and Egypt, the E-2 visa validity based on reciprocity is 3 months only. It should be noted though that regardless of the validity period of the visa, an holder will still get a period of authorized stay of two years, which means that he or she can stay in the U.S. for a full period of two years without having to leave. If he or she departs and the visa has expired, an application for renewal of the visa will have to be filed. If there is a need to stay in the U.S. longer, it is also an option to file an application for extension of E-2 status with USCIS.
