UK Sole Representative Visa: Legacy Route

The UK Sole Representative route is now closed to new initial applications for overseas businesses seeking to establish a UK branch or subsidiary. Existing Sole Representative visa holders may still be able to extend their permission or apply for settlement, depending on their circumstances.

Overseas companies seeking to open a UK branch or subsidiary should usually consider current business immigration alternatives, including the Global Business Mobility: UK Expansion Worker visa route, where appropriate.

UK Start-up Visa: Closed to Most New Applicants

The UK Start-up visa is now a legacy route. In most cases, new entrepreneurs can no longer apply for this visa unless they already hold a qualifying Start-up endorsement issued before the route closed to new applicants.

Existing Start-up visa holders may still be able to apply for their partner and children to join them. Entrepreneurs who want to build an innovative, viable and scalable business in the UK should consider the UK Innovator Founder Visa.

UK Innovator Founder Visa

The UK Innovator Founder Visa replaced the previous Innovator and Start-up routes and is now one of the main UK visa options for entrepreneurs seeking to establish an innovative, viable and scalable business in the United Kingdom. Applicants must be endorsed by an approved endorsing body before applying.

UK Global Talent Visa: Design Industry Pathway

On 1 July 2026, the UK introduced a new Design Industry endorsement pathway to the Global Talent visa. Introduced by the March 2026 Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules (HC 1691), this route is sometimes described as a “UK designer visa.” It is aimed at leading and up-and-coming designers in fields that were not previously catered for under the Global Talent route, such as product, graphic, industrial, digital, UX/UI and game design.

Like other Global Talent categories, the design pathway does not require a job offer, an employer sponsor or a minimum salary. Applicants must instead be endorsed as having exceptional talent (established leaders) or exceptional promise (emerging leaders) on the basis of internationally recognised design work. Successful applicants can usually bring their partner and children, work flexibly in the UK, and may be able to apply for settlement in time. Inaccurate or incomplete answers can create serious immigration consequences, potentially including visa refusal or a finding of inadmissibility.
